Hard Drive Help

I have a 24 inch iMac and I need some advice. When I checked the HD using the disk utility program I end up with the following message.

http://www.ehmac.ca/images/smilies/confused.gif
************************************************** ***********
Verifying volume “250 Gb iMac HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
%)
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume 250 Gb iMac HD needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
************************************************** **

The 'Repair' button is grayed out and I am not sure what to do.

Thanks for any replies....

Means you need a better disk utility to fix the underlying issues, such as Diskwarrior.

(And no, the error doesn't mean an impending hardware failure - in fact, such an errior rarely points to defective hardware, despite it being a very real possibility.)

Did you try booting off the Restore DVD and trying the repair with the drive not mounted? I assume that you ran the test from within OSX ?

Thanks a bunch guys.

I use Super Duper to back up the internal 250Mb HD to an external Firewire 800. I booted from it an low and behold the 'repair' button came to life. The repair went without a hitch. All is green now.

Thanks for the help to you both.
