Hey friends,

I'm new on this post. Hi.

I have a Blue and White G3 upgraded from the pokey 300MHZ Zif to a faster 500MHZ/1 MG cache ZIf card. I'm thinking of going the G4 upgrade path and am wondering if any other Canuck Mac user has upgraded their "older" G3's to G4 Power. Is a 400MHZ G4 noticeably faster? I've been checking out http://www.macsales.com for the latest news on upgrades and prices. I also frequent http://www.xlr8yourmac.com for upgrade news and reports.

Anywho. Just wondering...

It depends on what you use your Mac for. If you're using Mac OS X, then a G4 processor should be in that Mac. The G4 is noticably faster than the G3 under OS X. If you're under Mac OS 9 and/or play many games, the G3 @ 500 MHz should stay. When it comes to games, the MHz matters, not the processor -- at least not G3/G4 ones.

Hope that helps.

As a general rule, if you don't use an Altivec-optimized or enabled application, there isn't much difference between a G3 and a G4.

Larger caches on some desktop G4s can make a difference, all things being equal.
