Solid state vs Flash

Probably not as fast as solid state, but I found this site the other day:

First Blu-ray Drive for Apple's 'Books, Replace Notebook Hard Drive with Compact Flash, and More

Pretty neat. I like the older 680x0 series Powerbooks for messing around in Classic. If they had IDE internal interfaces I'd definitely upgrade them to this with a nice 2GB or 4GB card.

There are 16GB Compact Flash from $250USD...

SanDisk 16GB CompactFlash Card - dealnews.com

Say the adapter is $100CAD, that's $700 for 32GB of flash storage :O I'd still prefer a hard drive for media storage but you could probably fit the OS + apps on one card, use another card for virtual memory, then have a media drive. I'd wait for them to make a 16GB or 32GB expresscard.

Are you backed up??? If so, why? Psyllium Fibre is not free but will do wonders!

Compact flash however is WAY slower than the type of Flash memory that is used in SSHDs. There is a big problem with 'camera' type Flash cards, in that the entire block has to be erased and rewritten every time you want to change one bit. Which is why flash based hard drives are still $$$$ and rare.

$2 a gigabyte in 2012? That's still a huge amount of money. A 250 gig hard drive would be 500 dollars, whereas a current 250 gig is maybe 80 dollars. But hey, that would be cool to have a non-physically crashable drive and I'm sure it'll be popular in a lot of mission-critical enterprise applications.

Well, the dual adapter is only $29.99 USD. I'd take a mini flash HD over a USB key anyday, since I can plop the adapter into my portable FW enclosure (which has an internal IDE interface) anyday.

Keep in mind that the article targeted older macs, such as the 1xx and 5xx series. You can definiely fit an entire OS plus applications in < 80MB, never mind 2GB of space! And for those that had crappy battery life, the flash drive is probably a lot better.

But you're right. For media, I prefer RAID or some other "conventional" storage method until prices for the faster stuff drop.

IDE -- Dual CF Adaptor US$29

But remember that CF memory is SLOW -- 2 MB/s - 10 MB/s vs. 66 MBs - 150 MB/s on a 'real' hard drive

If you want 16 Gb of 16.7 MB/s burst rate in an IDE package (that is, only about 8 times slower than a hard drive) you can get it - for US$1,700
