I'm not trying to apologize for iMovie. I agree with you! But it could be anything. How about deleting its plist file??

I've done video editing on my XP box with 512mb of RAM using Premier without much trouble... it actually performed better than iMovie on my MacBook with 1GB.
Well, here I will apologize for iMovie. I wonder which of the two -- Premier or iMovie -- are more complex bodies of code. Sure, iMovie is consumer, but that doesn't mean that its code is amateur. There's the animated themes, the media tie-ins to iTunes and iPhoto, iDVD chapter authoring. Maybe that stuff weighs in a little heavier than Premier does...?

Or, iMovie could be a POS under the hood? Lords knows hat, even though it's running pretty well for me these days, there were times where it was RIDICULOUSLY buggy.

thanks macaholic for that detailed suggestion. Cutting the video into segments is something that has come to my mind. Though emptying the trash didn't.

I guess working with smaller segments would be the ideal solution.

I've had experiencing working with my pc as well, running with 512mb ram as well using premiere and yes performance, in general seems better, but it is very well integrated with other softwares like garageband and iDVD which I think makes the whole production much easier for the general users.

Yes -- iMovie's trash.

There is one thing to keep in mind when emptying iMovie's trash -- and yes, it's a bug. if you have any still photos that you have applied ken Burns effects to, you are unable to update a picture's effect once you have emptied the trash. If your iMovie project is of reasonable size, then the solution is to not empty the trash. If, otoh, it's a huge project, then emptying the trash would make the project more manageable and then you would instead REDO any pictures whose Ken Burns effect you may want to update.

Beats buying a new Mac, where otherwise your current one is RAWKIN! Again, if you're dealing with gigantic projects regularly, then some "heavier iron" would be an option. But if this project is a one-off, then screw it; chop that puppy up and assemble the edits together when all done.

Could the version of premier also been older and therefore less comprehensive in feature set and therefore less demanding on the system? Even MS's MovieMaker II isn't as comprehensive as iMovie/iLife.

Indeed. I love how the integration makes for a MUCH more fluid creative process. No File Menu/Import File/rummage around the drive/import file/see that it doesn't work/delete it/lather, rinse, repeat BS. It's instant gratification, baby!
