USB key issue

We have a USB key that the girlfriend uses on the macbook. Every once in awile when she saves something to it is causes the computer to beachball FOREVER. The USB key is hot and we need to hard shutdown the laptop to get the key out (we dont want Data corruption). The USB key works fine on the Intel imac and windows computers but the macbook it's a problem? It doesn't matter which port either. We use a Laser printer on the macbook and it works fine. Any ideas?

What brand is the key? I have a Sandisk memolry key that does the same thing. Causes errors all over my PPC Mini to the point where programs stop functioning and all my icons vanish off the desktop. Haven't used it on my Intel Imac for fear I could corrupt it in some way.
