That's odd. I shoot with a Nikon Coolpix 8800 and iPhoto accepts my raw shots and Photoshop CS manipulates them just fine.

Do you have the latest version of iphoto?

There is a manually downloadable Apple RAW support update that doesn't show up in software update.

The D40 is a pretty new camera that may not be supported quite yet by Apple.

Apple releases RAW updates every few months. I would say that you can likely expect an update with D40 support in 10.4.9 .

Give serious consideration to Nikon's own Nikon Capture Software.

Excellent NEF (raw) processing designed specifically for the Nikon raw format.

You can download a free trial version, just follow the 'downloads' link from this page:

Nikon Capture link.

According to Apple's website, iPhoto does not yet support RAW for your camera.

(Gotta learn to proofread before posting)

I'd heard the Nikon software was not Universal yet. Is that still the case?

That's true. Should have mentioned it. Hopefully soon.
