I tried using file vault for an over all security solution but apparently I don't have enough HD space for it to work.
I was wondering if it possible to password protect a single folder in itself. So that every time I or someone tries to open it it would require a password.
Is this possible? I've tried searching it and tried to figure it out on my own with out any luck.

Offhand, I still haven't found a way to encrypt a single folder. However, what you can do pretty easily, is create an encrypted disk image for the same use.

Well... not too long ago on St Catherine street in the intersection of crescent area in Montreal I almost got my laptop mugged off of me. Scariest thing is that it was only 8:30pm some stores were still busy and the streets were still packed. Two "thugs" approached me tugging on my laptop bag asking whats inside and kept following me closely in an intimidating fashion. They knew full well what was in it and I knew full well what they were upto. Short story long I jumped in a cab and got away.
Ever since then I wanted to use file vault to secure all my contents, but I only have 4 gigs left on my HD and it requires more to encrypt the home folder. So I'm looking for the next best thing.
You need to be careful with widespread encryption - Filefault has it's share of woes.
Put the the things you need to protect in an encrypted doc.
Many situations can cause you to lose access to mass encrypted files and folders and they are GONE.
You need to be very rigourous in backup as well.
Tread carefully as I think you have a higher risk of losing the info thatn losing the lappie.
Get a knapsack that doesn't look like a computer bag. Better choice in my mind.
You can do some things like firmware based passwords to limit access without encrypting files.
I use iNotepad for critical info - KISS but strong.

Thanks guys I'll try these solutions.
As for laptop bags! I'm done with those! Using a back pack from now on. I recommend the same to everyone!
How secure is the security password when turing on "require password to turn on, wake from sleep or screen saver"? (found in sys prefs, security) I know it only says required for wake and screen saver, but it is also necessary for turning the computer on as well.
Is this sufficient enough to keep someone from accessing my computer if it is stolen or I loose it?
The idea that some thugs would get away with my laptop burned me! For the future I'd like to know if in the unlikely event it does happen that they stole a laptop that is now worthless to them as it is unusable because its is locked by a password.
Well it's easy enough to change a hard-drive but even they can be zapped.
Just don't risk losing accesss to your data in being paranoid about others.
