Cost of a Dell XPS M2010 vs. 20" iMac

Just for fun I priced out a Dell XPS M2010 and a 20" iMac with a bumped up graphics card.

M2010:

Quote:
PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7400 (2.16GHz/667MHz/4MB)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® XP Professional
LCD DISPLAY 20.1 inch WSXGA+ Wide Screen with TrueLife™ and Integrated Web Cam
MEMORY 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms)
HARD DRIVE 240GB (2X120) 5400RPM SATA Hard Drives
OPTICAL DRIVE Slot Load DVD Drive on XPS M2010
WIRELESS NETWORK CARD Intel 3945 802.11a/g Dual-band Mini-Card
GRAPHICS CARD FREE 256MB ATI Mobility™ Radeon® X1800 - $150 Value
SOUND OPTION Integrated 2.1 Audio
Price $4,098.00

iMac 20":

Quote:
2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x512
250GB Serial ATA Drive
ATI Radeon X1600/256MB VRAM
SuperDrive 8X (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Apple Keyboard & Mighty Mouse + Mac OS X (US English)
20-inch widescreen LCD
AirPort Extreme
Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
The only upgrade is the graphics card on the iMac.

Price $1,849.00

I was at the mall the other day and passed a Dell kiosk where they were displaying the M2010. While it is somewhat more movable than an iMac, it isn't something you would want to lug around with you.

I just can't believe the price difference...am I missing something?

It's interesting that the Dell has roughly the same HD space, but divided into 2 drives, and they are 5400 rpm drives. A weak point, I reckon.

Anyway, the Mac is worth more simply because of OS X.

Worth Noting... 2 drives usually means a raid configuration. So no... it's far from being a weak point.

Does a RAID configuration mean you only get 120 GB of space for the price?

I'd much rather a single faster desktop drive than 2 laptop drives in a RAID. Plus, laptop drives typically have way less capacity and cost way more to replace.

With 2 drives, you double the chance of a premature disk failure.

Depends on the type of Raid, but presumably, we're talking about striped raid for increased performance, not for backup reasons. So no... you get the full 240GB (looks like a single drive).

Good for you. Some of us actually care about speed. Would you avoid adding a stick of ram to your system because you'll double your chance of ram failure? That's a pretty strange way of thinking. A striped raid setup is considerably faster than a single drive could ever be... and for some people (i.e. video editors) that's important. Just because you're paranoid about drive failure, doesn't mean Raid is a bad thing.

Look... I'm not defending the Dell. I think it's ridiculously overpriced and ugly as sin. But it does have it's strong points. Other companies are allowed to have some good technology too... don't knock them just cuz they're not Apple.

That's the main reason I don't come on here much. Too many sheep. Baaah.

For a person who doesn't come on here much, 352 posts ain't bad.

Actually, I have nothing against Dell, in fact I use their 20" widescreen monitor with my Cube and I'm very happy with it. I would buy other things from them when they go on sale, but not their computers.
