Can't copy to External Firewire Drive

it's a 300GB drive, I can transfer EVERY FILE except the one that I need to transfer, it's an iMovie file nearly 18GB and I need to do it so I can use iDVD...
I try to copy and after awhile of doing it, it tells me that the location could be protected or something that I should copy it to another location.
I also tried opening the iMovie and save as to the 300GB drive, no go.
I try to compress it to a mov (or a number of other formats) and same thing, it goes for a bit, then stops.

I reset the permissions on the drive and tried again, still nothing, it does it for awhile then just stops.

I am so stuck it's not even funny anymore. I moved programs over to my External to free up space, and I'm still 2 gigs away from being able to use iDVD.

HELP!
A Deaf German lady REALLY needs her Bad German Variety series converted to DVD.

how is the external drive formatted? If its FAT32, it won't be able to have any files in it above 4gb. you'll need to reformat it in HFS+ if you want to save your iDVD file there.

Are you using disk utility to do the formatting? if so, pick Mac OS extended. let us know if that fixes the problem or not.
