Few Questions about refurbs

Well, Im really considering selling this 939 system and switching to a Intel 17" iMac, I cans ave like 200$ if I buy it refurb which sounds good to me. But I was wondering, what exatcly happens when the refurb it? What if its all scratched and stuff, etc? Anyone have any good/bad experiences?

Thanks in advance,
Neil

I don't know for sure what they do but my 20" refurbed Imac just arrived today and my first impressions are that it looks no different to a new model. I can't vouch for any changes inside the box but I think it's an excellent deal. You are, after all, still covered by Apple's full warranty (I got the Applecare too), unlike a purchase from some joe who is upgrading and wants to sell their old computer. Sometimes these Joes, who adertise in the Ehmac classifieds, scam folk too by not delivering the goods while eagerly accepting the money (see ravingreilly thread).

You couldn't tell a refurb from a new one except the packaging is different. It comes with full warranty. Usually a "refurb" is simply an opened box return.

Now that's harsh! Very few true ehmacers, those with posts as well as ads scam anyone. I admit you should be cautious of those who simply place ads and are not active members.

Ok, thanks so far. I wish I could get the 20", but the extra 400$ is just too much. I was at Futureshop today comparing the two, and I almost think the 20" is too big to look at from close up...

Anybody experience the hidden benefits of extra ram or a better video card installed, or is that just refurb folklore?

As someone who has a 20" iMac... It certainly amazing screen real estate. Now the 17" ers seem a little small. But then again, I'm writing this on my Powerbook 12".

Well holy cow! I just checked under the hood after Vapours posting and see that I do indeed have 1gb of RAM instead of the 512MB that was advertised. It is not myth after all.

One small point though, does anyone know about the Imac's fan. I just woke the computer up and for the last 15 minutes the fan has been running like Concorde taking off, non-stop. Is that usual????

Check your CPU status to see how busy it is. It may just be that you have a process that's running the CPU hard/hot.
