Windows Media Player-jerky playback

Hi,

When I use Windows Media Player lately the image is very jerky, as if it is not playing all the frames. Sometimes it freezes for a few seconds before continuing. The soundtrack plays normally.

Any ideas on what this could be? I have tried shutting down all other applications and this helps, but does not completely clear it up. As far as I know I am using the latest version of WMP.

BTW- I am on an older (4 yrs) G4 Powerbook. My hard-drive is not huge (18GB) but I try to keep it at around 2/3 full at any given time.

I also use VLC but the wmv files will not play for me in VLC. I get an error message.

Thanks in advance

Have you tried Flip4Mac? Once I installed this, it completely fixed all of the issues I had with WMP. Cause, now everything works in quicktime.

Its the only way to go. Make sure you get the update from the Flip site. If you download directly from versiontracker it is an older version that has some issues with Safari. Get the updated version and your good to go.

I was just going to write that it is not much better. in fact while the play back is smoother there is a weird effect that causes the picture to sort of 'droop' every few seconds. The skin on a face appears to be aging very quickly (like 80yrs in 3 seconds) and then rejuvinate. Very strange effect. And one, I might ad, that I would have paid good money for back in the '60's.

I'll trash the version I got from VT and have a look for the site. Any chance of a link? and is it a free download?

The new version is installed and I still get the slight lag and the weird droopy effect described above.

I wonder if it has to do with the size of the file I am trying to play. It is a large wmv file (2.1 Gb)
