I would love to have it keep doing everything it already does, only a little faster.
Most people wouldn't find this worth the hassle of swapping computers. More RAM kinda makes sense if your aspirations really are this simple (why not skip the hard drive?). However, if you think you'd make use of the combo drive, go for the 900.
What is you budget? What would you hope to sell your old iBook for?
I'm guessing I can sell my old iBook for about $500 CDN, since it comes with a little extra ram (384). That's just a guess from what I've seen them selling around Toronto.
An aquaintance has a 900mhz he wants to sell for about $650, with the specs I mentioned (640 ram, 40gb, combo, etc). I'm really considering the offer, since I personally think it's a very good price.
I've been reading the links posted in the thread, trying to figure out if getting the 900mhz would be a mistake. Thank you all for your help.
To be honest, I'm not really using the iPhoto and iMovie on my mac. The only thing I use regularly from that whole "i" series is iTunes. I'm more interested in being able to run Photoshop without wanting to stick a fork in my eye while waiting for simple commands to work.

Decent price, not outstanding. Good deal if it had Applecare still, or wireless.

PHOTOSHOP??!
The shoe drops.
After all this, NOW we're told about Photoshop.
Well, that's more G4 reliant than any other app out there! For Pete's sake get a G4 (as fast a one as you can afford and as much RAM as you can afford) -- and you should have mentioned your need to use Photoshop at the TOP of your thread. Be clear and through. That would have saved me and others alot of legwork.

All right, let's all take it easy now...
The reason I didn't mention Photoshop is because I don't use it regularly, and is not my top concern. I'll just keep random thoughts to myself from now on, ok?
Would there be a big difference in speed between a 900Mhz G3 w/640 ram/40Gb drive, and an 800Mhz G4?
There's actually a noticable speed increase even between the 500 MHz and the 600 MHz G3. The 500 is hobbled by a slow 66 MHz bus compared to 100 on the 600.
I agree with the view that replacing the hard drive would be prohibitively expensive. If you play your cards right, you can trade up to a machine with a better hard drive, optical drive and processor for less than the cost of replacing the hard drive.
