Mac Mini makes portable power gamers drool?!?

Man I couldnt believe what I found out today. As everyone may already know the graphics system that comes with the Mac Mini is kind of sad. Well here is the good news that would make any portable power gamer drool. Apple has implemented an MXM slot, which allows the Mac Minis graphics system to be upgraded.

So you could actually build a powerful computer around the Mac Mini.
I’m thinking 1GB of RAM, 256MB of Video........lol

Ummm... where are you getting your information?

Gamespot posted an article (which I can't get to load now) that said in essence "The Mini uses a lot of laptop technology. If a FUTURE version of the Mini used a MXM slot, then it would be cool for gamers."

This then has been misreported around the web (perhaps the first erroneous post was at joystiq) as saying the Mini HAS a MXM slot, or variously that new Minis in January WILL have the MXM slot.

Also think about it a sec -- 'real' gaming video cards are huge, require fans and require more power to run than the whole Mini...

A MXM slot requires a PCI-e buss. The existing (and only) Mini's use AGP. THey don't have PCI-e or MXM and never have.

Look at the photos of the Mac mini internals. Do you see any room for an MXM slot? I don't think so! The graphics chipset is soldered on, and even a newer version may be the same way.

there's absolutely no way the mac mini would be customizable in any way. every last peiace in that thing is custom made to fit inside the tiny box. i think your sources are... not good sources, haha. UNLESS the graphics chipset manufacturer started making other ones (wholesdale) that you coujld replace with the one soldered!! onto the board, than yes, if u wanted to risk killing ure mac mini, you could do it.

Lots of folks out there like to speculate about Apple products also.. I never believe anything until it is printed somewhere on the Apple website.. or blurted out of Steve Jobs' mouth...

The problem is cooling, my Radeon 9800 in my PC runs hotter than the Athlon 2800+ processor.

The Radeon 9200 in the Mini is dramatically underclocked as it is.

So, even if a system is capable of taking an upgrade from a logic perspective, thermal circumstances might make it unworkable.

That's when you've got to start thinking: "outboard motor".

Like a hovercraft.
