Two possible explanations:

1) Faster product cycle requiring more bodies

2) Apple will *at last* enter the sub-notebook category

Actually that article just says that Apple hired some ex vaio designers... if they passed the hiring process for that dept in Apple I think it's a good thing

Hate to break it to everyone but this is not the first nor will it be the last time Apple works with sony on building powerbooks. I am too lazy to find a link today but google it. Sony has designed a ton of the powerbooks it the past.

Good thing is, at least the product will come out with a little "tried and tested" design experience. The VAIOs in my opinion are pretty good machines (I used one for work for a while). The article also statest that Sony helped Apple design the first PowerBook line...which in my opinion was terrible as I owned one and had to give it back to Apple because it crashed so much. Hopefully there is a hiring process to meet today's Apple standards

guys ... Sony is NOT designing it. Apple is. They are hiring on some people that (formerly -- or soon the be formerly hehe) designed VAIO products.

OMG ..what Sony bought APPLE !!!!! What's that Steve Jobs is Marvin Gays love child?

It always helps to read an article before discussing its implications...

Yup I particularly liked the comment that said that laptops should have Sony looks and IBM guts. I had three ThinkPads they were absolutely unbreakable. My two recent Macs have been really flimsy by comparison (Alu 12 and now iBook 12).
