From my previous post, I am deadset into getting either a Powerbook G4 1.67mhz or an Imac G5 20" for personal use/school etc.
I guess I am leaning more towards the powerbook as it seems to be more then good enough for my needs. However, been reading the other Mac forums and been seeing a "HUGE" thread about powerbook display problems? I'm not sure if this issue had been posted here but, is that something occurring here?
I will be going to the Compusmart downtown tomorrow and checking their PB out and seeing if I could notice any lines etc etc. But from reading the posts about them, it seems majority of the PB's have this issue.
I really don't want to end up spending almost $3000 for a computer that has monitor issues.
I'm new to Mac and don't know much about Mac issues etc. If I wanted issues, I'd stay with my PC's hehe.
If you really want to exit the Windows scene, then why not buy a Powerbook, knowing you have an entire year to use it before having to buy AppleCare to extend coverage for another 2 years? Granted, AppleCare is expensive (although I bought mine on eBay and saved a bundle), but those display problems should show up in a year's time. Remember, just because youread of 20 people having display issues doesn't mean that there are a lot of PB's with the same problem. On most of these type of forums, this is what you will find- people posting issues with their machine. I'm sure there are lots out there with none at all- like myself. I've read of many PB's with the lower RAM slot going bad. I still have both of my slots working, and I'm the 2nd owner of the 1.33 PB.
I just got the new powerbook yesterday. It does have the lines on the screen as described, but I have to say, it isn't nearly as bad as described. I do graphics, and have tested using 1 pixel lines etc. It is noticeable up close, and I'm seeing if it really interferes. But otherwise, I'm loving the bigger vram, 7200 rpm drive and hi def screen. For the first time, I ordered bto what I thought I should get, and it rocks. Real choice, is damn good.
I recommend this powerbook. The battery life, is very much improved. With airport and a bright screen, I'm seeing well over 3 hours. I barely saw over 2 hours on the last one when it was new.

Groove,
I'm probably going to get the same specs as yours, upgrade to 2gig ram and 7200rpm HD. What I worried about is the extent of the issues as it seems everyone had different varying extents.
If it's something barely noticeable then that shouldnt be a problem as I really like the overall stats/specs and not including the look of the PB. Just wish it's something not so severe that I will notice it all the time and have that feeling of......... I shouldn't have bought it.
I wanted to see these "lines" for myself and experience it first hand.
The new PB packs a lot of good punch, too bad they have display issues.
Worst case scenario.......... those 20" Imac G5 looks damn good!
If you only need the PB for occasional portability, I'd get the iMac.
It's not only a heck of a lot faster, but with the savings you could pick up a cheaper iBook.
But it also depends on what you plan on using it for. I gave back a 1.5 GHZ Powerbook at work and got a Dual 2.0 which absolutely screams (for graphics work).
