Dual Layer Slot Loading Drive for the Mac mini
Hello all,
Recently I have needed to make some dual layer dvd discs. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on dual layer dvd burners for the mac mini. I have toast 7 installed. I found some info on google as an example of what I'm thinking about. Do you think a regular dvd drive in an external enclosure is a better concept? Thanks, OM Pioneer DVR-K05L Slot Loading DVD-RW Drive The Pioneer DVR-K05L Dual Layer Slot Loading Drive is the perfect upgrade for your Mac mini. Able to burn all types of media, including Dual Layer, you'll be able to create your own movies or archive your files with ease. The Pioneer DVR-K05L is natively supported by Mac OS X 10.4.3 and later - no software patches needed! If you're running a previous version of the Mac OS, then you will need to download Christian Moeller's PatchBurn software (click here to download). The DVR-K05L is fully compatible with Roxio Toast and NTI DragonBurn. Just plug & play! The Pioneer DVR-K05L includes a 1 year Manufacturer warranty. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/optical-drives http://www.mcetech.com/minidvdr8dl.html |

I think an external would be a better idea. If you outgrow the mini, at least you will always have an external dual-layer drive sitting around. Also, if you are ever looking to sell your mini, this pricy upgrade probably won't increase the total value of the mini by much (because some people shopping for a mini won't need that feature anyway). If space is not an issue, I would definitely go external. There is also the advantage that now you have a dual-layer DVD burner that will work with all your macs, rather than just one.

It also seems as though the external would be cheaper (there is either an installation fee or larger cost if you want to install yourself...although I might be looking at the wrong section)...and you wouldn't have to worry about installing it yourself. This would be an easy decision for me (seems that you are getting extra value from an external in that you can use it from multiple computers) but you may not want the extra clutter. I would go external, personally though.

Pioneer DVR-110D works fine for me. Was less than $70.00 at some PeeCee joint. iDVD till doesn't play nice with it, however, only supporting single layer. I came across a hacked version of iDVD that WILL handle dual layer disks. If you get such a drive, PM me and I'll send it to you.

I had the lg external dual layer with my old G4, will not work in dual layer with Idvd 5.01, only apple supported drives will work, vendoe supported drives do not unlock the 8 gig capacity in Idvd.

Theres a Mac utility called Patchburn that will make non-Pioneer drives work with OS X (new Pioneers sometimes need it too as the emerge from time to time). In some cases, the darned burner's ROMs have to be flashed IN A PC, then put into a Mac.
I also came across a version of iDVD (version 5.0.1) that has been hacked to recognize dual-layer DVD media.
