I think the current PB's will drop in price by maybe a few $100's when the new intel PB's are released because they will probably sport better battery life, slimmer size, a cooler design and maybe a built in isight as predicted by some people. I don't believe the ibooks are going to be updated at the beginning of Jan so there current value should remain the same.
The Intel PB release in January is just a rumour, not fact. There were similar rumours all summer of a widescreen iBook release and it still isn't here. If you choose to wait, it could be until June 06 before you buy a laptop. The other variable you must consider is this: Would you prefer a laptop built on established and proven technology, or would you like to be a tester for Apple with the new Intel/OS X combination?
That's what sucks about waiting for new apple products....we're never 100% sure when they'll be released even if they are being discussed on rumor sites....nothing is ever definite until the products are posted on Apple's website or there is an Apple conference for them.
PBs and iBooks will continue a natural devaluation IMO with very little effect because of the Intel processors. This is assuming that software will still be PowerPC compatible until at least 2009, in which by that time our machines will be good enough for e-mail, internet, and word processing. I do expect that G5 computers will run a longer course.

I think it would suck harder if Apple released new versions of its computers every, say, 6 months.

why would that suck? every computer manufacturer tend to update their specs every 6 months if not even more often. You never buy a computer assuming that it will be the absolute best of the best for a couple of years, that will never happen. You buy the computer assuming that it will serve you well for the next four years or so. My iBook is only a 1.2Ghz G4, a paltry little computer by today's standards yet it is really serving me well now and will serve me for years to come even though by 2007 year it may be 5x slower than whatever Intel PowerMacs there'll be. It's good to know that Apple will continue updating specs quite often so when I am one day ready to upgrade, I will be buying the best there is available at the time.
