Panther installed flawlessly over the pre-release in 40 minutes on my B&W G4/500.
Much checking to do before it runs my 10.2.8 workhorse volume though.
Any Photoshop experience?
Handling of multiple volumes seems a quantum leap up from Jag.
A ting of butay!
All these "clubhouses" around kind of reminds me of highschool-you got the rich popular kids(G5)-you got your smart kids (panther)- you got your jocks (ibooks)-you got your jocks that can get girls (ppowerbook)-you got your smart jocks (laptops running panther)-you got your rich popular smart kids (G5 running panther).
It has kind of turned into a competition.
I'll remain the quiet average kid (Imac running OSX jaguar)...
I hope it becomes the fastest clubhouse but if the time of delivery from Apple is any indication than I'm not sure that will be possible.
Still waiting......Here KItty Kitty Kitty
Or atleast for the next 11 months, by which time all the cool rich kids will be complaining about how old it is and speculation will be rampant about the impending release of {insert Apple's Next Jungle cate here}
JAMG - I doubt that. Not the next 11 months just up until a month before WWDC, and screenshots of 10.4 are being leaked. Mind you with Panther, the only screenshots were leaked a day before the keynote.
So far, the Big Black Cat upgrade has been behaving fairly well after dealing with a few minor glitches. I'm probably throwing a lot at it and am quite pleased.

I love Panther, A big black cat on the big black Pismo.
Other cats?
Lynx : Any of several wildcats of the genus Lynx, especially L. canadensis of northern North America or L. lynx of Eurasia, having soft thick fur, a black-tipped short tail, and tufted ears
But then I looked up Wildcat and look what I found:
Wild-cat \Wild"-cat`\, a. 1. Unsound; worthless; irresponsible; unsafe; -- said to have been originally applied to the notes of an insolvent bank in Michigan upon which there was the figure of a panther.
In a production meeting the other day, I was asked about the new G5's and current upgrades to major DTP apps...
I mentioned that I have heard many good things about the G5 but almost every 1st gen Mac has had some flaw {usually minor}... and that Quark 6 will need a few months for the industry to find bugs to be patched or quirks to work around... Adobe is releasing upgrades to all its software in one go... Bugs and fun to be expected as usual...
Couple that with the industries willingness to stay in OS 9 and Quark 4.. I see no rush to upgrade, now.. spring being a more likely time frame...
Well you should have seen the blood rush from the faces of the owners/sales team... The G5 1.6 was delivered yesterday... software and a new InRip backend system to be installed on Friday....
Now, I won't say no to new hardware and software...
But fall through Xmas is a pretty busy time of year...
I have limited staff, with no current plans to increase...
and I barely have time to think...
So of course the owners, who collectively can fill the back side of a business card with what they know about prepress... {Rant} want to install a new imagesetter/pdf workflow and OS X Jaguar, {one almost cried when I told him the OS is a generation behind befor ethe G5 was out of the box} and new versions of All our major Apps... all at the same time, "That won't affect the workflow will it? My job is important...."
I will be ordering Panther up to date. ASAP...
I am not even going to bother with Jag...
On one hand, I realize that no one is going to feel sorry for me because I got a G5 sooner than I expected to...
But they ordered 1 monitor between the G5 and the Pentium that will run the RIP...
The G5 has only 256 Ram and the vendor preinstalled Quark and a few other apps in advance... Which i will have to reinstall once I reformat and partician the drive...
Meanwhile since friday, I have been rebuilding Bad PDFs generated from bad Word docs with lo-rez RGB scans...
I should have become a stock broker... less stress...
Whaaaaa... poor me...
{Course... all this new stuff may make my life easier and enjoyable again... Who knows..}
I have every intention of loving and enjoying Panther...
If and when I get the time to open the box and set it up...
Frustration comes from getting a partial purchase...
My bosses have deluded themselves into thinking that they have bought everything I'll need, so no more purchases for some time... Right... And one OS X G5 will be perfectly compatible with the rest of the dept which ranges from Beige g3's on OS 9.1 to one G4 on OS 9.2... Half *ssed is not a good workflow...
Even though the last 2 weeks have been unending last minute panic rushes of Word and Publisher files that are completely innappropriate for Film separations...
They want to know why the G5 is still in the box... Software comes on Friday...
Sure I can play with Jag now, but client are probably not going to want to pay for that... I think they want thier jobs processed...
Like I said, I am not complaining about getting the G5, just that it was ordered by sales men who don't know what was needed and think the buying is done.
I will need more bits and pieces and time to install, learn the new apps and create the new workflow...
The InRip system is more of a priority, since it will eliminate a lot of inabilities of our old PS2 Harlequin Rip. The only thing is how long it will take to identify what the new system is capable of and adjusting the Prepress flow to tke advantage of the new system...
Xmas rush is not the time for experimentation...
But what do I know... I am not a salesman
