Any idea why Apple removed the screen brightness?

I have a 867G4 tower hooked up to the 17" Studio LCD. Under OS9 I could adjust the screen brightness and contrast, there is even a button right on the display. Under OSX Apple removed this which means I can't turn down the brightness of the screen. Anyone know of a work around and possible why Apple did this?

To get at the actual brightness of the screen, you need to "Calibrate" your display under the Displays portion of System Preferences.

My screen is calibrated but sometimes late at night i want to turn the brightness down, much easier on the eyes. There used to be a slider in the Display preferences but under OSX it's gone.

Brightness Control

If you want to dim your screen, Brightness Control works well.
F14/F15 should also work, though...
