why is tiger alwasy looking for an internet connection?

i just moved to tiger and got quite bothered by the fact that it is always looking for an internet connection.
the message 'couldn't find server' on internet connect pops up frequently.

i tried disabling those widgets that needs to work with internet, as i thought dashboard is the problem maker. unsuccessful.
it is not auto clock update either.

any pointers? as this is a primary work machine, i do not have it hooked on to the internet.
there must be something that needs to update from the interenet used by tiger, but what is it?

can dashboard be switched off?

I installed Tiger and never had this problem...As you said there might exist a program that is trying to update or just plain ring home but the fact that that the message "couldn't find server" is coming from internet connect makes this less probable IMHO.

For what its worth why don't you try installing a trial version of Little snitch. It will give you the name of the application that is trying to access the internet and the option to either deny the application ( deny forever or until the application quits ) or allow the application (forever or until the application quits ).

About dash board, try disabling active screen corners and deleting the icon from the Dock. Then open up terminal and type "killall Dock". That way Dashboard will be unloaded from memory and will not be accidentally triggered.

Hope it helps.

Check the Internet Connect preferences/settings; sounds like it's trying to make a connection...

It could also be Software Update. Go into the System Prefs and tell Software Update not to update automatically.

But the best advise is definitely get Little Snitch. That will tell you exactly what it is.

Couple of things .. I found an applescript a while back that turns off dashboard, I don't remember the name but pretty sure it was on versiontracker.com

Also it might be the Date and Time settings, it could be trying to automatically set your date and time, so be sure to disable that in the control panel as well.
