Advice: FileVault, Tiger

Hi all,

Looking for some info re: the use of FileVault.

1. how is the reliability now? I recall some data loss issues a while back
2. when doing a backup, are the individual files backed up unencrypted or is the whole encrypted image copied over? if the latter, that would mean if there is a 100GB encrypted user folder, each backup would have to reprint a 100GB image, correct??
3. any negative issues that you're aware of??

thanks!!

R

I use it on my Powerbook. So far it does not seem to cause any problems. I ran out of power once and it came bouncing back. So I am actually not so worried about it anymore. No Dataloss yet either (never had one with the original one either).

The "cleanup" of the Image during a shutdown can take quite some time. Especially when you're on battery it is a a bit scary because I always wonder what may happen if the battery runs low while it is doing this.

But as written above, it did lose power once and it didn't seem to affect the data reliablity.

Also, it seems to cause a slight performance hit on disk operations, but that may just be my imagination

I've had to do a lot of fixups with FileVault .. I don't trust it as far as I can throw it, have seen it eat way too much data.

if you want reliable file encryption check out the offerings from SubrosaSoft .. http://www.subrosasoft.com/MacSoftwa...=index&cPath=6
