I'm concerned that Apple just slipped this Tiger only on new G5s situation on the community with no warning and wondered how many know about this issue and where Pro users are with Panther versus Tiger.
I can't seem to get a poll set up here so I'd appreciate feedback in these areas from Pro users. If you can copy and paste the category you work in plus the OS you currently use beside the categories. Thanks
Thanks. I'm really trying to get a feel for the issue and advise clients accurately. We have one guy completely hung between FCP working better on Tiger and Protools not working at all ![]() The Quicktime issues are not helping

Graphics: CS2 and Quark 6.5 both work fine for me under Tiger. I've had no major problems other than suitcase not always updating/loading fonts immediately.
Did you know the new Macs are Tiger only?? No Does this affect your plans/buying decision?? No, as I am happy with my current system & hoping to get a few years out of it. May look to add a laptop in near future, but I'll probably wait 'til the Intel transition is complete & go from there.

Pro Audio - Protools 6.4.1 - Panther.
Running a d24 TDM system that will only run as high as Protools 6.4.1 which will not work with Tiger. Also d24 will only operate with the standard PCI slots which leaves me with no choice but stick with my Dual 1.42 MDD. Did you know the new Macs are Tiger only?? NO Does this affect your plans/buying decision?? YES |

Well it's never been any secret that, as soon as a new OS ids brought out, that Apple ships it by default on all its computers (within a month or two of launch, depending on inventory levels etc.). I don't see why this would come as a surprise (MacDoc I'm sure you know this right?)
AFAIK, there has never been any option to "back date" to an old OS version when ordering a new machine. You can always wipe the HD with a clean Panther install. As long as Panther is compatible with the h/w that should not be a problem. |

MacDoc,
We have purchased Tiger for certain machines but went back to Panther. Issues involved mostly QT. I learned from you that the new Macs are Tiger only. We cancelled an order for five Machines after that: until we can get more information, they are on hold. We also have not upgraded FCP studio because the optimum system is 10.4 We have decided to wait and see more feedback. We can't afford to loose production time at this moment. Graphics: Adobe CS suite, DeBabelizer Pro Pro Video: FCP studio, Adobe AE, Avid Other smaller issue - 10.4 and/or QT 7 completely breaks Adobe Premiere. A product that we need for legacy jobs at times. |

Pro Audio: N/A Pro Video: N/A and answer this. Did you know the new Macs are Tiger only?? No Does this affect your plans/buying decision?? No - to be honest, I'll probably upgrade to a Dual G5 PowerMac within a few months. .... Just out of curiosity, why would Tiger-only compatibility affect a buying decision anyway? I'm running Tiger now and really like it. What would affect my buying decision more is the whole switch to intel ... I worry that developers will tend to optimize their software towards the intel processor instead of both ...

Pro Audio - Logic
Did you know the new Macs are Tiger only?? Yes Did this affect your plans/buying decision?? Yes I was aiming for a new dual 2.0GHz G5. It looked ideal because of its regular PCI slots which are more friendly to my UAD dsp cards than PCI-X. But the Tiger-only limitation and the blow-out price of a new Panther G5 on clearance, made the decision for me. G5/1.8 dual/2.25GB/OS 10.3.9/Logic 7.1/Pro Application Support 3.0/QuickTime 6.5 (QuickTime 7 does not seem to work with Logic!) Everything running smoothly. But I still have to keep an OS9 tower around for importing OMF files into Logic 6. All OSX versions of Logic are, so far, crippled in this regard. That's progress. Otherwise Logic 7 on a G5 rocks! |

![]() did I know new G5's were Tiger only? No, and I am concerned by this, and by not being told directly.

Hmmmm - are still any DP 1.8s in the market?? - I was considering adding them and you've brought up a damn good reason to get a few in.
It's exactly this sort of info that's needed. Thanks so far......more please. ![]() I'm glad to hear the major graphic apps are reasonable on Tiger - that's the approach we are taking with new DP 2 which we like BUT were annoyed about the Tiger only thing.
