Ram Question

Hey all,

so i went into the apple store to ask about adding ram (doubling my 512 in my PB 1.25, to 1 gig of RAM)

the apple genius said it won't make a difference, just repair permissions.

any thoughts.. is it worth spending 200 on new RAM?

will my PB be speedier.. using a lot of adobe apps.?

I suggest you to get low-priced ram that fits your need. Apple overprice his ram sometimes.

The more RAM the better if you can afford it. I remember a huge difference going from 512mb to 1 gig, definately worth it

YES! <a href="http://accordionguy.blogware.com/blog/_archives/2005/6/8/919483.html">here's</a> someone else's tale about buying ram for a pb this week.

(oh, and the "YES" is for adding more RAM -- not for paying $200 for 512 at the Apple store)

Another option

Canada Ram has 2 X 512 for 1/3 more:
(Assuming all prices are Canadian)

Macintosh Powerbook G4 (Aluminum) 17” 1 GHz, 1.33 GHz , 15" 1 GHz, 1.25 GHz (2 slots)
256Mb DDR 50153
$ 58
512Mb DDR 50154-1
$ 153
1024Mb Samsung 50155
$ 324

...just in case you wanted to support Apple against Tiger Direct in T.D. vs Apple RE: Suit concerning use of the word "Tiger".

But that does seem a big difference in price.

Canada Ram:

I have the 15" 1.25 Ghz Powerbook as well ... with 1 G RAM ... while I agree that it does make sense for many things ... there is one item I discovered that it does not impact.

The original reason for upgrading RAM for myself was to decrease the time to encode a DVD ... after upgrading ... I discovered that the increase did not make any difference in the time it took to do the encoding ... I know because I tried a test after upgrading the RAM to see what would happen (re-encoding a project I had done before the upgrade).

I posted my findings on Apple's support forum and the response was that there was no difference in my case since DVD encoding is very processor intensive and since I only had a single processor ... the RAM upgrade did not make any difference for this task.

I think more RAM will be of benefit in many cases ... just do not expect it to improve everything.

What is a good brand of ram to buy? Or does it really matter? Is it safe to buy the cheapest ram when you are doing graphics intensive work?

Prices regarding a gig of ram for a 466 Digital Audio PowerMac are across the board, depending on retailer and brand. Very confusing.
