"Mad as Hell and Switching to Mac"

Mad as hell, switching to Mac
By Winn Schwartau, Network World, 05/23/05

This is my first column written on a Mac - ever. Maybe I should have done it a long time ago, but I never said I was smart, just obstinate. I was a PC bigot.

But now, I've had it. I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore...

He's right. Giving clueless people a Mac is the safest bet. However since I myself have a clue as well as friends in my circle, we can operate both platforms with no problems or security issues. The added benefit to having a clue is that one may be able to operate a very fast computer on a budget (PC stuff). I work on both platforms at work and at home my main box is a PC I put together and I couldnt possibly as for more speed or stability. My Mac is a 400Mhz B&W G3 which is getting long in the tooth but ok for what it does.

Playing tetrismuch?

It doesn't matter if you put your PC in a bomb shelted, disconnecting it from all modern society, not having any possible electrical interference with it. It also doesn't matter if you have a PhD in computer science, or are actually the guy that created windows, hiding behind Bill's glamorous looks and charisma; something WILL go wrong with your wintel PC.

Cool Terminal fun...

There's quite a bit that can be done in terminal. Tetris and most others aren't really considered eggs. Here are a few fun things to do in Terminal I found years ago...

Star Wars (in ASCII): telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl

The BOFH Excuse Server: telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl 666

The Funk Talker Webpage: telnet the-funk.net 7000

Adventure (aka Colassal Cave): emacs -batch -l dunnet

For the ones who remember Zork, it is still there, played from the browser though...

I remember playing Adventure for the first time on an hp series 1000 years ago. Gaming has come a long way since then!

Hey I stole this name... you better tell my server that something was supposed to go wrong because it probably forgot to mess up. Its about 3 years old so far running 24 hours a day - FTP, HTTP, DNS, Exchange 5.5 and Fileserver... oh and its running Active Directory (setup as DC root). Gets rebooted usually about once every month or so after some security updates. Oh and just so you dont think its new hardware... its a dual pentium pro 200Mhz box with 1gig RAM and some older SCSI drives. Bulletproof.

My G3 b&w probably mistook itself for a wintel box since its failed more than anything I've ever owned. Guess OSX 10.2.x and 10.3.x were less than perfect? Not sure. Maybe the box has hardware problems. Lots of Kernel panics and on one instance, it froze and upon reboot got nothing but the do not enter sign. That was nice. Had to reinstall that but it was funny because it was a clean install of 10.3.
