Hmmm... Good chance you could. Should simply be a BTO variation. But, why would you want to do that when you can get the 17" 2Ghz version w/ SuperD for $250 more?? You'll even get a 7hz bump in bus speeds.

It would likely cost you just as much - and I will say, possibly more to add it to the low end 17". Kinda not worth it....

That's why you buy a higher model.. even if you could add a Superdrive to the 1.8 GHz model, by the time the extra cost of it was added, it'd be $75 or less cheaper than the 2.0 GHz model, hence why it isn't an option.

There is a review somewhere about the hard drive performance of the eMac running circles around the drive performance of the G5 iMac. Has the controller been updated on the new iMac on this performance issue?

Some of the iMac G5's had noise issues. Are these solved and gone on the latest and greatest?
Um, how are eMac hard drives running circles around iMac G5 ones? Both are 7200-rpm, yet the iMac G5 uses Serial ATA HD's versus standard ATA drives in the eMac (150 vs 100, ATA). That review can hardly be accurate.

As per noise, the iMac G5's never had noise issues except to those people who are noise over-sensitive. "Oh, no, I can hear the fan a bit!" I've played with countless iMacs and the only ones that ever made more noise than they should had broken midplanes - which wasn't a comon problem.

LOL.

Maybe they can hear all that data stampeding across the system bus like wild boar in the North-African desert!

The iMac noise issue was solve a long ago. It only affected one batch, but since it was among the first batch to be shipped, it got a lot more attention than what it deserved.

You dont need screen spanning hack with the iMac, it can span/mirror natively. MacDoc can confirm this, he had a screenshot of a dual screen iMac a while back.

As for the HD, they had to make some serious change in the design of the iMac mother board so I guess they took the time to fix the problem. We cant be sure right now until people do some tests but I am pretty sure its solved.

the current iMac line up is excellent. But as before, I think the only 'real' option is the 20'' if you are a pseudo serious computer user. The bigger screen really help a lot and its not such a big price jump for what you get (dont forget to get BT keyboard and mouse!)

Actually Mantat, the iMac g5 does not span screens natively. You have to hack it with the 'screen spanning doctor'.

as for the 20" being the only 'real' option- what the hell does that mean? My 17" is a great machine, and I work it beyond what you call 'pseudo serious' levels. Kind of an insult to some, don't you think?

as for the BT kbd and mouse, I would wait untill there are more BT 2 devices at realistic prices on the market before considering this to be 'essential' If apple was really serious about BT, they would raise the price of the new iMacs $30 or so and include the BT kbd and mouse in the box to compliment the addition of BT standard on all iMacs...

is it easy to add ram yourself to the iMacG5? I got the basic ram with my powerbook and added it myself very easily. Is adding ram to the iMacG5 just as easy?
