Running a 3.5" IDE drive from a Mac mini

Here's an article about someone modding a 3.5" IDE drive from the internal ATA controller of the Mac mini. He simply uses a 2.5" IDE to 3.5" converter and runs the drive externally.

http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/am...articles/mini/

Here's how the IDE cable is converted to the larger format connector.

Looks kinda stupid, but the drive performance beat an external Firewire application.

3.5" IDE drives are bigger, faster and cheaper than their 2.5" counterparts, AND the onboard IDE controller is faster than the firewire 400 bus.

The Mac mini has many purposes. For some, it's entry price-point. For others, it's the size and aesthetics. For others, it's the nuts and bolt hardware. For the modders, who want to max performance (to the detriment of the aesthetics) this is way to get "cheaper, faster, bigger" hard disk space for their platforms.
