Question Confused on what business software to use?

Hello,

I did a search here on the forum and I'm still confused as to which business software I should invest in?

I want to be able to have a General Ledger, Accounting, Payroll etc...

I'm not sure which software packages do what?

I notice that QuickBooks Pro for Mac does accounting, but can you set up a general ledger with it?

I have also seen a Canadian software package called Liquid Ledger? But this software says that it isn't intended for a small business. I was wondering if anyone here was using it for their small business? Maybe there is a work around?

What is the easiest way of setting up a general ledger? Do most of you use a spreadsheet program?

How do Canadian business owners who use a Mac deal with Payroll? I will be starting out with just myself as the business owner. Is there some sort of software for the Mac that can track and do the math for my own payroll? I have yet to find something that is available for the Mac and for Canadians.

So to conclude what I'm looking for is, something that I can do accounting, set up my own general ledger that can be used in Canada and is not restricted to the US set up and be able to do my own payroll.

For those of you who do your own payroll, what are you using? Is there other ways of doing it? Does the government offer some easy way of doing it on your own? It would be nice to use my Mac for that, but if not, I guess I can do without.

I didn't realise that starting up my own business would be this difficult when it came to trying to decide what software was available for us Canadians and our Macs. What a nightmare this has turned out to be.

Thank you.

Hey MacGYVER... Just about to head out, but here's a couple of real quick points:

- I know a few people who are ordering the US version of QuickBooks. It can be used in Canada. Can't find the link right now, but there is a FAQ on their page confirming that QuickBook's US has an option to Canadianize it with GST etc... Don't think you can do Canadian Payroll with it though

- For payroll, there is the sevice to outsource it which works good for small business: ADP

- You can also look at ChechMark's MultiLedger and their Payroll program. It supports Canadian Payroll.

Hey,

I downloaded the trial version of Quickbooks Pro for Macs and I can attest that it does indeed work for Canadian businesses.
As for payroll it does have a payroll section....but I don't have it set up and I don't have any employees so I'm not entirely sure what you can and can't do in it.
Best thing to do is search for Quickbooks Pro on Ehmac and try and find the link someone posted on the trial version download page and check it out for yourself.

Thank you, for the responses so far. I wish Intuit had more screen shots of Quickbooks Pro 2005 application, then what they have on their site.

It looks like I will give Quickbooks Pro a try and see how it handles everything .

MultiLedger reminds me of something like DOS and trying to make text boxes out of code. Blahhhhh what an ugly GUI to work with. Although I guess those that use it in OS X are happy with it.

I thought the payroll section of Quickbooks Pro was only for the US?
