enclosure for SATA FW 800

Any recommendations for such an enclosure for an external hardrrive? I'll probably get a 200 gig to put in it. Will an SATA external drive work with my Powerbook? IS an SATA drive required to work with my G5 tower as an external?

Definitely go Firewire over USB. Look for the Oxford 911 firewire chipset over the Prolific firewire chipset.
Look at OWC, cooldrives.com and locally at tigerdirect.ca and Bytecc Firewire Oxford 911 enclosures from Canada Computers and NCIX.com.

Whatever fits your budget IDE or SATA. If you buy OEM, you get a better (longer) warranty.

Yes, externally in a SATA firewire enclosure. If you've got FW800 great, otherwise get a converter cable (FW800 to FW400). Or simply get a FW400 enclosure if you've only got Firewire 400.

No. It's external, so it's your Firewire connection.

IDE/ATA is cheaper than SATA in terms of Firewire enclosures and drives themselves. Save the SATA drive for internal applications for now.

I'd recommend LaCie or WiebeTech. If you are looking for a FW800 capable drive, then make sure its second generation as the first Oxford 922 chipsets did not deliver the double speed boost you'd expect over FW400 drives.

It was the Oxford 912 that didn't deliver. The new generation is Oxford 922 for Firewire 800. AFAIK, LaCie doesn't offer just enclosures, only full drive set-ups.

I could be wrong on these points.

So, what chipset shall I look for- the 911, 912 or 922? I plan on removing my 160 gig (SATA) from my G5 and replacing it with a 200 gig SATA. I'll put the 160 in an enclosure (preferably USB 2.0 / FW 800).
