Cool Mac mini and RAM.. and other questions..

So, I'm sitting here attempting to justify a Mac mini even though I don't really need a new Mac to replace my G4/800. (What else is new? ) My only beef like I've stated before is the single RAM slot - I would need at least 512 MB, bare minimum. I'm so used to running with over a gig in my current G4 (1.75 GB, to be exact), so I'm asking you guys that are running with 512 MB if you think it is sufficient or not. The problem is that I run extensive apps such as Macromedia Dreamweaver MX and Fireworks MX - would 512 MB cut it? And I must admit that the price for a 1 GB chip is more than I'd like to pay at the moment.

Regardless, I wouldn't be purchasing one until mid-to-end March, so I have time to figure things out. I'm currently running a dual-450 G4 at work with 512 MB of RAM and it doesn't seem slow at all, but still..arg, I hate that single RAM slot crap.

The AP/BT combo module can be added later for $128 or something, correct? I don't feel like paying for two things now that I won't use now.. (and not for a long time, at that).

Thirdly, considering that the Mac mini comes with a 5400-rpm hard drive, is there any real noticable difference in speed between 5400 and 7200? When I mean noticable, I mean major noticable.. especially in Macromedia apps?

Lastly, the difference between 1.25 GHz and 1.42 GHz.. I would absolutely love the high-end model for long-lasting sake, but is it worth the $120 increase in price? (that and double the HD space.. I would NOT be upgrading from 40 GB > 80 GB on the 1.25 GHz model - I'm buying either one stock except for the RAM.)

I would stick with what you've got, especially for the apps you're running. Save up for used/refurb G5 Powermac.

However, looking at this:

Well, once you get it open it looks as though the ram is pretty easy to replace. The harddrive is definitely in the middle of this morass.

Between a paltry 200Mhz of CPU and MORE RAM, i say MORE RAM is MORE important.

I agree with Macaholic.. more RAM is always good when you're looking at a slight CPU increase.

The difference between 800 MHz and 1.25 GHz is 425 MHz - not 200 MHz.

Where does that AP go?

Remember you can add later but it must be done by a AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) otherwise you void warrantee. These are not Customers-Installable-Parts. After warrantee go nuts but other wise you pay the labour.

I have no doubt that you could handle these installs Lars. But those are the rules.

Read your own initial post- you were asking if $120 more for 1.42 over 1.25 was worth it...

Boosting your G4 tower further I think would be a better investment, unless you need a smaller footprint machine..G4 upgrade module prices are already dropping, more and faster coming soon. The mini will only be expandable via external devices-and the 1g ram upgrade costs almost as much as the mini.

Lars, I really don't think this machine is for you and your stated professional needs. What you need to do is find a new use for it.

p.s. Howdy HJS!

1GB is 226.99 USD at Crucial.com, $425 USD as an upgrade at store.apple.com. I understand it, but I'm still floored by it.

I would say definitely not. Wait for, or pony up for, something better. Especially if you can afford expensive software like that.

Ah, nevermind in that case. Looks I was confused.
