Question How do iPods work?

I know the basics. music+iPod+earphones=more fun than you could ever imagine and any time you dance to it you will appear to be in silhouette...perfect.

What I need to knwo is can it hold all the music on it's own or do you always need to have it on the Computer at home. I have about 20 gigs that I would like to clean up but there's no point to an iPod if everytime I sync it it will want to see the library adn sync with that...Does this make any sense? can an iPod be autonomous? There, I think I said all I need to.

Your iPod holds a hard copy of your playlist and all your tunes, so no, once you shove them on your iPod, you can delete them from your hard drive / Music Library. But once you delete them from your iPod, they're then gone for good if they're not still on your hard drive...

As above, set your iPod to manually sync the music. Once you remove the music from your puter, if you want to put it back, there are tons of apps that "hack" the iPod a bit to recover it back to your machine.

I have an iPod 3G and an iPod mini and both have different music on them from the same computer.

Cheers,

I don't believe you need this 'hack' for putting music back on to the iTunes you took it off from - only on other computers and playlists (iTunes) that your iPod didn't originally connect with.

If you are planning on dumping all of your tunes onto an iPod and then deleting from your computer, you should consider a back-up mechanism. An full size external hard drive (not a mobile drive) will have two firewire ports and will allow you to connect both an iPod and the drvie to your computer. Move your library to the external drive and then synch to the iPod. If your iPod is damaged or stolen you don't want to loose all of your music files. you can always just stick the drive in a closet but if you have space for it you can enjoy your music from your computer as well.
