Dual Layer DVD's

Can a Dual Layer DVD play in a regular DVD drive? I know you need special Dual Layer DVD/RW drives to burn them, but can the Dual Layer disks play in a regular drive?

DL DVDs (DVD9) have been around for a long time now. A lot if not all of your dvds you have in your movie collection are likely dual layer. If you see DVD9 on the box or if you put that DVD in your drive and it's > 4.7 GB then it's dual layer. So yes, if you burn DVD9s then you should be able to play them in your standard player

DVD = 4.7gb
DVD9 = 4.7gb X 2

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but thats my understanding

agreed. most commercial dvds these days are dual layer. i ahve not had an issue yet.

about halfway through a movie you can sometimes see the pause where it goes to the second layer

You're correct -- in fact, most people have probably noticed a disc changing layers whilst watching a DVD but don't realize it. Usually there is a split second pause or "snap-to" roughly half-way through a movie when the laser adjusts. It's barely noticable, but it's there.
