Trouble Downloading latest Adobe Acrobat Reader

Background: I’m trying to complete an Ontario Gov’t form - a “secure” pdf file which uses the latest version of pdf and requires the latest Acrobat Reader to open/fill-in properly.

I have an older version of the complete Adobe Acrobate (8.3.1) - which will open the file, but screws up some of the text, and Preview, which will not open the file - instead I get instructions to download the latest reader.

Problem: I’ve followed a few different links - all take me to the same Adobe web-page
get.adobe.com/reader which has a handy button to “Install Now” - clicked.

This takes me to a general web-page [www.adobe.com] which has the option to download Adobe reader.
Which immediately takes me back to the previous page. And the loop continues.

I understand Adobe was hacked lately and is most likely working diligently on their
security - hence the problem downloading files etc., but I really need the updated reader.

Question: Does anyone know of any alternate means of downloading the latest version?
Any suggestions would be appreciated

Set-up: Mid 2010 27” iMac i7 running 10.6.8, Safari 5.1.10 (Javascript enabled, tried Java enabled/ disabled, no difference)

As usual it is the "damned" form that forces us to install an updated version of Reader.

BTW good luck keeping that POS from constantly demanding you update your already up-to-date version of Reader.

OK and one of those T-shirts would be nice.

I just tried changing the settings in Adobe Updater then used Find Any File to list any file that had been modified within the last 5 minutes, one of which was AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat

A Google on it and directions found to disable it, but you say it doesn't always work:

Turn off automatic updates on Mac OS

... Adobe Updater ... method

But the optional method looks a bit more permanent:

If your computer does not have an internet connection, then you can manually edit the AdobeUpdaterPreferences.dat file.

To manually edit the AdobeUpdaterPreferences.dat file, do the following:

Start the Adobe Updater application from /Applications/Utilities/Adobe Utilities/Adobe Updater5/.
When the Adobe Updater dialog appears, stating that there is no Internet connection, click Cancel.
Navigate to "/Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Updater5/" and open the AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat file in TextEdit.
If the <AutoCheck>1</AutoCheck> tag already exists, then change the value from 1 to 0. Otherwise, add the line <AutoCheck>0</AutoCheck> anywhere between the <AdobeUpdater></AdobeUpdater> tags.
Close and save the AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat file.

Disable automatic check for updates | CS3

Maybe that will fix it for you..???
