I'm considering purchasing a WD 4TB My Book External HD from COSTCO, $ 179.00, USB 3/2 - Intended for EyeTV video back-up
I initially planned to go with a MacAlly enclosure (with Firewire 800) and install a 2Tb WD drive, but this deal at COSTCO is cheaper & twice the capacity.
Now I'm concerned that WD might just be clearing out stock of a lackluster design and the whole unit will die once I've copied all my files over.
My 2010 iMac just supports USB2 - much slower than firewire, but since I will only be archiving compressed files once a week, I'll set it up and work on the "Honey-Do" list while it runs.
FWIW, I use a WD 2TB My Book for my iTunes video library and all playback is smooth as glass. I can see no reason why a 4 TB would perform any differently.
I have the WD 4TB My Book.. It's a pretty good drive. Lots of capacity and decent transfer speeds over USB 3.0 on my iMac and Macbook Air. One thing I hate about it is that if you turn off the drive, and then turn off your Mac and turn it back on.. it wakes the drive up. Waking up from Sleep is fine, but power up always wakes the drive up. Beats me why they put a Power Button on the drive if it powers on when my Mac turns on. Other than that.. it's a great deal. I got mine for $199 not too long ago
I wouldn't be too concerned with Costco clearing them out.
WD drives seem to be one of the better inexpensive drives out there, especially when compared with Seagate
I've been using a WD raid for a couple of years now and no complaints whatsoever
I just picked up the WD Thunderbolt 4tb and that's a bit of an investment
I actually really like their design, quiet and quite good looking
One last thing about Costco, if you're not happy take it back. Their return policy is something else. I just called about a printer I bought over a year ago that's acting up, I was actually asking where to get it serviced, they just said return it!
I'm always hesitant about buying stuff when I can't ask anyone at the outlet about the product. I spoke to an "associate", and he just picked up the card and read it to me!
Other than that he didn't know anything about computers/hard drive/electronics.
This site is a valuable resource - thanks again
