I am on a 1 year old 15" MBP 2 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4 GB memory … OSX 10.8.1 with all the latest updates - since I adopted Mountain Lion and the latest Safari, I am getting frequent Safari crashes … getting to be more frequent as the days go by. Anyone else noticing the same? Suggestions (aside from using another browser - I actually LIKE Safari!)?

Does Safari still crash with Extensions disabled? Is your Flash up to date?

Only have DIVX extension, which I just turned off, and yes my flash is up to date. Will keep an eye on it. thanks.

disappears out of existence. Haven't tried reinstalling - guess I'll try that next.

Have you tried trashing the Safari .plist file? Quit Safari, move the .plist file to the desktop and then restart Safari. Your prefs will need to be reset, but see if that helps. If it does, then trash the old .plist file.
It's located in Users->Library->Preferences->com.apple.Safari.plist; and in order to do that, you'll need to have made the user library visible, which it is not, by default in ML. Either follow the directions here: Show User Library Directory in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion & 10.8 Mountain Lion or download Mountain Tweaks (free) which is a great little utility that allows you to do a number of other things as well.

Maybe as suggested try Trashing your Safari 6 and after a restart see if Software Update will download and install it.
Otherwise as Apple integrated it with Mountain Lion, it is no longer available for download from the Apple website or other sources so maybe a reinstall using the ML COMBO update may fix things???
