I think it pretty harsh to do that, forcing everyone to buy the new os and possibly new hardware.
They are living up to the 84 commercial ethier fall inline or else LOL

It was always a time-limited beta. If people didn't think they'd follow through, then that's their problem.

I had only used the Messages beta for a few days, but had to dump it and go back to iChat. It was incompatible (at least for me) with my folks' version of iChat on their old G4 Lampshade iMac.
When I move up to Mountain Lion next month, not sure what we'll do about that little issue... hopefully Apple's engineers have squashed that bug.
I've been using it ever since the release. Works great and would really miss it if it dies. Why would Apple not leave it intact until, say two weeks after the release of Mountain Lion and then disable it for anyone still using Lion? Or is that too much for Apple to grasp?

It has been great. My daughter has been on a teaching exchange at a university in Wales. And it has been very useful in keeping in touch with her.
I have to say I really don't get some of the directions Apple is taking of late. In particular I am not interested in Mountain Lion and iOS6 being "tightly integrated with Facebook".....
Time to take a look at Linux again. Began way back with Unix anyway. It'd be just going back to my roots.

If you don't want Facebook integration, don't change your settings to integrate with Facebook.
Messages for Mac is an inconsistent dog of an app (no ill will to consistent dogs). Any improvement would be welcome.

Or better yet, just leave it the F alone. My computers are just old enough to not be able to use Mountain Lion, so it seems kind of mean-spirited to remove something that is working from my POV.
