I hope this doesn't make people want to actually trade in their old Apple iPad 2,
It's probably better to sell your old iPad 2 privately than to cave in to this scheme.

Prices for the iPad 2 through Apple's trade-in program start at $205 for a 16-gigabyte Wi-Fi-only model in good condition. The highest possible trade-in value is for the 64-gigabyte 3G model in good condition, which is worth a $320 gift card.

What really sucks about this program is that the iPad 1 is completely left out of it,
The iPad 1 is virtually considered worthless, Must be the chip.

The iPad 2 and the iPad 3 share a similar chip,
Not exactly the same, But why does Apple want it back?

Why is Apple wanting to pay for it?

This is a very historical moment in Apple history.

Hmmm....

Absolutely. I decided to up version an iPad 1 to iPad 2, rather than shell out for a new iPad 3. I paid $400 for a used, in-warranty, excellent condition 16gb 3G iPad 2 and was happy at that price. Apple would have paid the seller considerable less.

What planet are you people on?

Name me one other industry that takes in used equipment and offers more than 30-40% of the original selling price as a trade-in, except for possibly the auto industry?

How many industries can you even name that offer their customers any value for a used product, other than the auto industry and the photography industry and some sporting goods retailers.

How many manufacturers other than the auto industry offer any value for used products?

They are offering a service to those that don't want to be bothered selling their used device privately. There is a cost to offer that service. Apple gives the old user $320, then must do an inspection on the device, clean it up as much as possible and try to resell it. What would a used 64 Gb 3G iPad 2 sell for these days?

If you don't like the price that Apple is offering in this deal, sell your old iPad privately, or somewhere else.

hmm... loggged out while posting.. strange

Anyway, the Apple program does include the original iPad, but neither Apple nor FutureShop gives it more that 25% of initial cost. However, using these prices I was able to get an acceptable cash sale for a mint condition model. Any resales are going to be hurt by the starter iPad2 models still being sold by Apple. My iPad was a day one unit so I've been using it practically every day since so the buyer will need to think of battery replacement if they use it more than a year. Which is another $100 on top of the resale price.
