JailBreak/UNLOCK

Hi guys, late last year I was in Europe and got charged up the ying yang for looking at maps while in Paris, maybe a total of 10 page views or 6-7 minuets of browser time. Nearly $300 later and I decided that never again would I go outside of Ontario without UNLOCKING/jailbreaking my phone.

Current with Fido on a 3GS, ver 4.3.1 baseband 05.16.02 on iTunes 10.2.2.12 Win7 Pro 64bit. I've been following the Dev Team blog and it seems that there are several jailbreak options currently available but I am mostly interested in the UNLOCK so I can take out the Fido SIM card and replace it with an ATT SIM card while I'm in the southern USA in the next 2 weeks.

It seems that there are problems with compatibility of one sort or another with each option: UltraSn0w looked great until a baseband problem and there are many others. I have held off updating to 4.3.2 but perhaps some of you can share how to's or any suggestions would be great, thanks in advance.

For the sake of the trip, if you really have to have an iPhone you might be able to pick up a cheap 3G which is jailbreak/unlockable using redsn0w and then ultrasn0w. My 3G is currently running on T-Mobile but was originally an AT&T, my sons was on Rogers in Canada. I haven't seen a reliable unlock solution for the 3Gs on the updated firmware.

Alternative is to talk to Fido and if you are out of contract (ie. paid for the phone) you might be able to get it factory unlocked. If your contract is almost up, consider paying the early cancellation fee and getting the unlock done.

Most expensive option would be to get a new, unlocked 4.

Unfortunately I have 2 years left on the contract and really just want to unlock for the trips I'm going to take over the next year or so, thanks anyways.

I'm in Paris right now and I can confidently say that getting data running on an unlocked phone is near impossible. Ive been back to the SFR store 3 times now. The microsim works great for phone, but the 10€ data plan I purchased on Monday, is still not working.

What I have been relying on is a gps app called "smart maps Paris". It works with preloaded maps, not quite as good as the built-in one, but it's doable. Along with a Paris metro app, you're set.

(sorry I read your original post wrong- I thought you were going to Paris for some reason - that said I'm sure you could find a gps app for north America with preloaded maps)

Have a fun trip!

That's not true. My unlocked 3Gs performed like a champ in London, England with data, SMS and voice. Your case might be carrier-specific.

Cheers

Not carrier specific. FRANCE specific. Last I checked, London was in the UK.

I had a t-mobile card in the states which worked fine (for EDGE).

Tell me what JailBreak/Unlock are you using, or did use for both trips. I will be in the Southern US in the next 2 weeks but in the fall I may be going to Europe again and Germany in particular after a stay in the UK as well.

I was thinking "country-"specific, but typed "carrier-"specific, no idea why!

Cheers

Hehe. That's cool!

To the OP, I'm now on an officially unlocked phone, but in the past I used ultrasn0w. Not sure what the options are these days though.

For the states, however, I tried to get a SIM through AT&T, who told me that they could not offer me PAYG data options. This is why I ended up with T-Mobile who had data and voice options for PAYG. It was around 60bucks for unlimited voice & txt (in US) plus 100mb (which lasts forever on EDGE)

Unfortunately at this time the Ultrasn0w s/w unlock only works on 3Gs's with 05.13 or earlier basebands & there is no way to downgrade your baseband after it has been updated.
