my 3 years contract (iPhone 3G) will come to an end in a few months and I still don't know if I should pull the trigger now on an iPhone 4 or just wait couple of months for the iPhone 5.
There's not much information about the iPhone 5 and when they're gonna release it so I'm a little confused. There's alot of rumors about bigger screen but that's about it.
I'd wait it's almost a given that it will also get the upgrade to the new a5 processor that the iPad got, which would be well worth the wait in my mind... That said you might be waiting longer than usual if current rumors pan out of a sept launch.

I would wait. You skipped the 3GS and the iPhone 4, whats the big deal with waiting till iPhone 5 comes out. It may be awhile, not a usual summer release, but maybe a fall one.

Hold on to what you have.. When the 5 comes out, the 4 will take a significant price drop.. So, if you are not satisfied with the 5's specs/features, the old trusty 4 is going to right there nice and cheap...
At that point, you can make your choice.

Remember that you are currently blocked from getting software updates and security patches.
Rumour now has iPhone 5 in the Fall, so that's 6 months not a couple.
However, it is expected that the iPhone 5 upgrades are fairly substantial and going with a 5 means a longer period of support from Apple. I.e. When they come out with iPhone 6 and drop support for iPhone 4, you'll still have a supported phone.

Personally, I cannot see how Apple could not release a new iPhone this year. While the iPhone4 is a terrific phone that sold ALOT of units, the hardware specs just will not hold up for another year. IIRC, the Cortex A8 is a 1ghz chip, but I believe it is underclocked to 800mhz.. (Again not to say it is rubbish, just saying it will be SEVERELY long in the tooth a year from June.) With the wave of the Android phones starting to run dual core processors, I just don't think Apple CAN wait another year with dilapidated hardware. Hell, my Samsung Android from last September is overclocked to 1.4ghz... And the new Tegra 2 phones are BLOWING it out of the water with benchmark results.. Literally doubling scores...
Sure, the screen is undoubtably the best in the business. But just think of how much revenue they will lose if the do not put a revised phone out this year. I am sure ALOT of people could care less about stats and hardware.. However, name another smart phone that has remained relevant for 1.5 years.
Perhaps in iOS 5, they might remove the underclocking of the processor, and make it run as a true 1ghz processor? (Again, I only believe it is underclocked.. no immediate data to verify it) Or, heaven forbid, overclock it.. (However I REALLY cannot see this as an option due to battery life and possible excessive wear on components... )
IMO, it would be a SERIOUSLY poor business move if Apple stayed idle for a year. Ofcourse, some might say they have the best GUI in the business, but it is getting long in the tooth. Android is getting more and more momentum.. Heck, I owned every iPhone to be released.. Multiple units of some of them. I was completely in.. However, I grew tired of the OS, and being an old (ok, maybe not OLD per say) Linux guy, Android was a natural fit..
Unless iOS is a SEVERE world-beating change in direction, I just cannot see them not releasing hardware this year..
I'm in the same boat and I'm going to wait. Besides the dog is getting very hungry and wants to give me everything I could possibly imagine cause I'm such a good customer
