We're pleased to announce, thanks to Remote HD, the 1st gen AppleTV is now able to act as an AirPlay compatible device! With Remote HD installed all the amazing features of AirPlay for the new black AppleTV are now available on the original silver models.

What can I stream?

Video, YouTube, video podcasts, and photos from iOS devices.
Video, and video podcasts from iTunes.
Video from other 3rd party apps if your iOS devices is modified to do so.
Audio streaming coming soon.
How does it work?

If you don't already have Remote HD purchase it here [iTunes link].
Install Remote HD on your AppleTV through the Maintenance --> Install Extras menu.
Restart your AppleTV.
Connect to your AppleTV with Remote HD - the AppleTV will now be recognized in all AirPlay compatible applications.
Remote HD is currently on sale for $3.99 - get it while it's hot!

Sweet news! I'm gonna try this right away.

Edited to add: important caveat—your ATV 1G must be unlocked first. Not sure how I accomplish this and what the downside would be, if any…

i got the email regarding this. when i clicked on it it took me to the app store to buy an app (remote hd i think?).

So i'm guessing (i didn't really look into it since i no longer have a first gen atv) it would seem you'd have to have an ATV with ATV flash (or perhaps hacked via another method) and the airplay would only work from an IOS device (not from a macbook or mac running os X).

is that correct? not exactly "true" airplay (although i guess it's better than nothing).

I'm more eager to hear advancements on the 2nd gen ATV jailbreaking front...

You have to install a RemoteHD's Apple TV plugin into your unlocked ATV1. You can unlock your ATV1 using ATVusb creator (free) or ATVflash, then buy the 3.99 RemoteHD App from iTunes. I'll be doing mine in the next day or two.

Too bad Airplay audio streaming isn't working yet, that's what I mainly want it for.

I gave it 4 out of 5 stars on iTunes,
Mainly because the arrow keys on the remote are too tightly together and not as
responsive as I'd like them to be, I'm always tapping them more than once,

Also I have to look at the remote to control it,
I'd like it better if I could control it without looking.

I also gave it 4 out 5 stars because Remote HD did something Apple couldn't do,
Remote HD has given Airplay to the First Generation Apple TV.

Full features of Remote HD can be found here.

I don't know if iTunes will approve my review, But here's a copy of it:

Quote:
Remote H.D. works 100% better than the original Remote app,
I just find that the navigation arrow keys aren't sensitive enough and tend to be difficult to activate,

Perhaps if the arrow keys were farther apart , Then the Remote control on my iPod touch would be more responsive.
I'm finding that I have to tap the arrow keys more than once to activate them, Very frustrating at times.
Also I don't always like to look at the remote to control it, So having the arrow keys farther apart would be better.

Otherwise, Remote HD works great with my first generation Apple TV,
I now have "Airplay", Just don't have audio streaming, But that'll come soon I hope.
Thanks to Firecore for alerting me about this app,
Getting it at 50% off is a bonus too.

4 out of 5 stars for doing something Apple couldn't do.
(Give Airplay to the First Generation Apple TV )

I wouldn't say "couldn't do" ....they simply choose not to.

It doesn't matter, iTunes has now published the review.
