Magic Jack, Pros & Cons?

Anyone have a Magic Jack?

Do they even work on Macs?

If so, pros, cons?

Yes they work on Mac.

Pro's...
Free North American long distance (once you pay your annual fee)
Can forward to any North American phone number for free
Includes voice mail (with email forwarding)

Cons...
Call quality not always the greatest, but not usually too bad, I find Skype to be better.
Have to have the USB key plugged in to work (computer always on when you want phone)
Takes up a USB port which sucks if you are on a laptop
Don't know if you can get a Canadian phone number

If you are using it with a laptop and your internet connection is on a UPS, it will. But in most cases it's a good point for the "cons" pile.

It sounds the same as any other voip phone. It's supposed to work with an intel mac but Ive never used mine with it. You can get a Canadian phone number but you have to pay extra for it. I wouldn't trust it as my only phone because if something goes wrong with your computer or internet it's not going to work.

You can get Canadian numbers, it is at an extra cost per year. I use mine a lot when I travel to the US to call home etc. Works great for me, I also carry an el cheapo corded phone with me in my laptop bag.
Also I use the American number that I received to my benefit to advertise on my business. I have a Hollywood telephone number, for which I freelance in film.
When you buy it in Canada around 50 bucks, you get your first year of service included with an American number.
I don't see it as a home phone replacement, yet!

For $3 a month, you get unlimited North America with Skype and if you have your home phone with Teksavvy, they charge 2.9 cents a minute for North America... I find Skype on my notebook, Desktop and iPhone works perfectly for moi.

I have both Skype and Majic Jack. I got rid of my home phone as I found I used Majic Jack on my laptop (reception not always the best) and Skype on my iphone. I have a MacBook Pro and cable internet.

I have both Vonage VoIP and MagicJack. I'd say the Vanage phone offers better call quality - but the MagicJack is ok for the most part. And sure, if your power or internet goes out you can't use it... but hey, that's what my iPhone is for

I've paid for a local area code (Canadian number). I think I remember it being about $10/yr more. But overall MagicJack is well worth it, especially since you can take it with you when travelling.
