Question unusual iphone request (HOWTO?)

I have the Apple IPhone 3GS. Here is a unique problem: I would like to "lock" one of my contacts, so that I do not accidentally phone that person while scrolling down my contacts list. (It's happened a few times, when it was not convenient to call that person.

One solution, I thought, was to remove one of the digits, so that I would be obliged to enter the full number before the call goes through. HOWEVER, this presents an additional problem, since when I receive a call from that person, he appears as an unknown caller.

With the full number and an identifying ringtone, I can know that the person is calling me, so *removing* a digit is NOT the solution.

Could someone guide me to a method whereby I DON'T accidentally call the number, yet have it recognized when the call is incoming?

... or am I asking the impossible?

TIA for any guidance or comments.

respectfully...

Hmmm, would changing the first 3 numbers to 555 make the phone dial a non existent number but still show it when incoming?

555-xxxx

This may not be the best solution, anynone else?

Hack? You might be able to put a "pause" or better yet a "wait" command symbol infront of the number so if you accidently hit it, you'd have a sec to cancel it or a second tap to confirm the call. Can't recall what the iPhone commands for pause and wait are offhand but a simple google search will tell you. Pretty sure that wouldn't affect who's calling.

What if you made up another number for that person (as either a landline or mobile). That way you would still see their info when they called, but if you clicked on their name you'd have to select what phone number to use.

The incoming number has to be the same as the outgoing. Otherwise, it is an "unknown' so I would not know that the person is calling.

Perhaps I should expand a bit more on the "cause" of the problem. Sometimes, when scrolling in my directory, the scroll goes too fast, and trying to "stop" it, I accidentally press on that person's number. Is there a way to SLOW DOWN the scrolling speed of the interface, perhaps?

I don't have 'fat fingers', but I keep being more and more disappointed with this phone.

FWIW: The current OS is 4.0

thanks for your comments....

Are you using Mac or PC?

I am using Mac, and I was able to create Contact Groups in the [Address Book] application. So I have the following groups setup:
- All Contacts
- Family
- Work

Perhaps you can create a "Do Not Call" group and put that one contact in, and the rest into a "Frequent Call" group. Once you are in the Contact app on the phone, you can go into the "Frequent Call" group (the group without the contact so you won't call them) until you hop up and then into the "Do Not Call" group or the "All Contacts" group containing that particular contact. That way, if the contact called they will get identified when you won't be calling them by mistake if you stay in the "Do Not Call" group.

I am not too sure if Windows does the same thing.

Hope this helps.

Wow... can't say i've ever had THIS problem before.

Maybe scroll SLOWER???

Thing is, when you're scrolling through your directory and you tap on a name, it should just bring up their contact page (not actually call them).

That's what my phone does anyway... are you referring to your recent call list? If so, I dont see why you would have to check it THAT often or scroll through it (almost never).

Either way, if you DO scroll and you tap your finger to stop it, try holding your finger in place for a second so it wont call... then you can drag your finger away and it will allow you to deselect the name without calling anyone.

Are you talking about your Favorites list? Because touching the name should not automatically dial the number for anyone.

Send a message via MSN to irontree
maybe put a space in front of the person's name that way they are elevated to the top of your contact list?
