I was one of the lucky ones who picked up an iPad on launch day and have been using it since Monday. As the semester come to an end that means a lot of research papers are due. I've been reading numerous journal articles on the iPad over the last two days and boy is it great not have to sit in front of a desk or having to print 20+ pages per article just so I can read else where.

Apple, please allow the iPad to be included in the academic discounts so more students can use this awesome device to "research on the go." What would be even better is have all of our $100-$300+ textbooks all within our iPad so we don't need to suffer from any back injuries.

What would be awesome is give a free/discounted iPad to students that purchase a Mac during back-2-school promotions ;)

Anyone else want to share the academic experience with your iPad?

tacsniper,

I have been waiting for a university student to come around with their experiences.

What program are you using to read articles? Does it render the pages quickly? Have you typed anything substantial?

These are questions a lot of my colleagues are asking, and I suspect students are as well. Making a video of you trying to type one of your essays on the iPad would be very enlightening.

I still cannot find a good review of typing on the iPad!

I agree. If the university library was digitised and I could put it on the iPad, then I could overlook the footnotes thing. Parenthetical the citation and format it later on a computer.

However, the academics books will probably be limited to Intro to Psych and PoliSci 101 for the American market.

Maybe Google Books will save me.

I'm just not feeling the iPad for work yet.

Excellent idea. They've done a MacBook with free iPod Touch and free printer for the last couple of years as a Mac-to-school bundle. How about a MacBook with an iPad for only $199 more. I could see that.

Plus with a combo deal Apple could avoid cannibalization of its own laptop line. But I'll bet they've already thought of this.

Adrian, I am using the app GoodReader Pro ($0.99 = Air Sharing on iPhone). I just need to type in the iPad's IP address in the address bar in Safari. I then transfer journal articles I want to read on the iPad or powerpoint slides, word documents etc. from my profs and it transfers to the iPad. The app opens the PDF and Powerpoint slides instantly. When I exit the app and reopen it later it will open at the page where I left off.

I just save some articles in my University's hard drive, so I will try to access articles that way tonight by using web login. I will let you know how that goes.

As for typing essays, I don't think I am ready for it yet. As mention by a lot of reviews, the iPad is still not meant for heavy typing. At least not for it on screen keyboard. However, I will consider doing editing work on it tho.

As for citation issue on Pages, my department (Criminal Justice Studies) uses APA format, so we do not use footnotes in our essays.

I will do a video at the end of the week to show the GoodReader app, as for typing even a portion an essay will be embarrassing. I think typing on the screen is still a steep learning curve for me tho.

Now as much as the iPad is nice, there are some disadvantages when reading on it. I cannot highlight specific lines or add (sticky)notes on it as if I printed the articles on paper. So this maybe an app some developers may consider to create or add to existing programs like the GoodReader Pro.
