Has anyone figured a way to get the ABC app to work in Canada?

That would be correct. Don't know of a Hot Spot Shield type of app for the iPad.

You'll need to be running some sort of paid vpn service like witopia through your network settings. It will cost you any where from 55 to 100 dollars a year. But I think its worth it, the ABC app is awesome (caught up on all my Flashfoward), and Hulu will have an app soon too. Plus you'll be able to get into the ibook store now if you're impatient. There are a surprising amount of free books. Hope that helps.

I'm currently using the iBook store with my US account.

Really? I have U.S account but couldn't get access to ibooks till I turned on my VPN. Maybe I was still stuck in the Canadian store.
