Dell's mini 5 vs iPad and iPhone.

Dell is reporting the release of a device to run against both the iPad and the iPhone. The mini 5 in what it sounds like, a 5 inch screen tablet and yes it's a phone. No worries they stayed away from Windows and are using Android 1.6 for this one. Said to be released around the same time as the iPad, in a couple of months. Did I mention it has a front facing camera for video chats.

i see it as a competitor for smartphones. it'll be interesting to see how the 4g iphone stacks up.

don't see it as a tablet at all.

For screen size comparison sake think about a GPS unit. If you have one of the larger ones, then that is about the size of the screen the mini 5 will have. Large enough to be seen at a distance and still pocketable in many cases. I think it has a good form factor but we'll have to wait and see what kind of software developes with it. I am waiting to see what Apple comes up with for their next iPhone version too. I have no use for the iPad. Too large to be mobile and I use a laptop already at home.

I can't believe the price! $1,098! Even with subsidies from the carriers its still likely to be at least $300 more than the iPhone. Its size is also a little odd/interesting. Strikes me as being too big for a cell phone but too small for a tablet/netbook. I'm not sure exactly where this will fit.

I'd be mildly interested in an Android tablet (from Dell or others) IF:

-5" is too small for a tablet (well alternative to a phone device) and too big for a phone (probably)...
-Full Android Marketplace and google apps
-Better browser with multitouch

I think Android with multitasking and notification window would make a lot of sense as a tablet (which I see primarily used for sitting on teh couch, lol)...but its not really there yet (kind of like the iPad..needs work)

I can't comment on the device (having not held one), but it's not competition for the iPad. But my initial opinion closely mirrors viper_2_4's first bullet point above.
