$229 to repair a home button is what i'd consider..... insane.
There's a jailbreak app called mQuickDo which replaces the home button with a swipe at the bottom of the touch screen. It's a temp fix until i work out how to fix this thing properly.
I haven't visited an apple store yet.... i was hoping to hear some feedback to see if it's worth the time & effort. (if apple expects me to pay $229 for them to fix it then it isn't)
looking around on the internet i've read solutions ranging from retarded (dropping the phone) to worth a shot (blowing air into the bottom).
Someone in this thread also mentions it could be a contact problem where the home button is being shorted by the battery :

Perhaps it is, however, it might end up costing close to that for unauthorized repair, which in turn would make you inelligible for this service in the future. As would opening the phone up yourself. Just something to think about anyhow.
well i swung by an apple store today... i was only offered the out of warranty $249 repair option.... sigh. REALLY disappointed in apple right now. If it was a cracked screen i could understand... but it's just the home button that sometimes works (but most of the time doesn't)
It seems some of the independent repair shops charge $50. A lot more reasonable.
Hi mate!!! i have a really great news, maybe it will works for you?? i also had the same problem with the home button..it become unresponsive and you need to press harder than normal to make it respond..i have been searching for solutions and i finally found it!! the problem with my iphone is (i guess!!) it has dust inside the home button panel..the dust most likely enter the iphone via the charger opening..so i just put i mouth there and blow some air(careful though dont blow too much water inside!!)..and after a few times doing that, i try a soft press on the home button and it become as responsive as a new one!! so i reckon you should try it too.. i'm not lying!! i am really happy i solved this problem!! it is really anoyying and im about to buy a new one iphone!! lucky!!
