iPhone Woes

Not sure if this has been brought up before but this keeps happening to me and its rather frustrating. When talking on my phone the screen shuts off, when I move it away from my face sometimes the screen is blank and I can never get it to come back on unless I force it to shut down. This especially happens when checking my voice mail. Is there a setting to keep the screen from shutting off while talking on it?

could be something blocking the sensors at the top of the phone, I would make sure that your case or fingers are not blocking the part of the phone above the screen, as that is where the sensor is that turns off your phone when you are talking on it.

I am using the case discussed in this thread, I'll see if any of the other users are having this problem.

Since the only case linked to in that thread is the Roots one I mentioned, I guess I should comment that I am no longer using that case. While I liked it overall, the magnets were too weak and the flap kept swinging open all the time.

When I was using it I did have some problems with the display occasionally shutting off but I never had to force it back on by rebooting the phone. I did some digging around and my version of the Roots leather case did not have holes for the sensors, just as Trevor mentioned. I chalked the problem up to that as one of my friends uses a newer version of the same case and it does have holes for the sensors.

I have since switched to a different case, surprisingly still one from Roots. I am now using their 'Tuff Skins' case for the iPhone 3G.

Alas this picture just shows the silicone rubber jacket, and not the holster/stand that also comes with it. The only drawback is this case does not have a protective flap to cover the front of the screen. I have learned to live with that and use a decent film screen protector to protect the front screen on the iPhone.

Back to your problem - I suspect it's a sensor being blocked rather than a magnet issue, but i suppose you'll only know if you stop using the leather case for a while to see if it still happens. Let us know how you make out... good luck!

Mine has holes but they don't exactly go over the speaker notches on the iPhone. Yes I did a test and it works fine without the case, nice to know it's not the phone. But not nice to know that I've wasted $30 on a case, well I guess I should be looking for a new one. The tuff skin one looks nice but I need a belt clip.

What did they say when you asked for a refund for the case?

It's not the holes for the speaker but the two 'hidden' sensors on the top section. The link below shows a better picture of the Tuff Skins with the belt holster that it comes with. You will see on the front of the silicone skin there are now 3 separate openings for the sensors on the iPhone 3G. The old leather case did not have these holes because it was not specifically designed for the iPhone 3G - it was made for the older versions.

Gentec-International

In any case, I was able to return my leather case to Best Buy and buy the Tuff Skins case instead. I did note when I was there that they have a new version of the leather case that is for the iPhone 3G, with all the appropriate cutouts for the sensors. Good luck on whichever route you choose - just glad to hear it's not the iPhone itself.

I've been using it since October so I doubt they'll take it back. I've always thought it was a software quark and was waiting for the next update to fix it. When it didn't I got fed up and created this thread. I do have the receipt from FS still, I wonder what they would say....

FS will probably decline, but if you explain what you found out about the case, it might not hurt to ask, you know, if you happen to be passing by.

You could also write the manufacturer.
