(my opinion) Still going through some teething issues, and if you're one of the ones affected it's damn annoying. This too shall pass, however.
Sign up for the free two-month trial, try to take advantage of as much of it as applies to you, you'll have a REALLY good idea if it's worth the money by the end of that time.
I love the syncing, the web galleries, the iDisk, the webmail, the push iCal and the iWeb/web hosting integration, those six are the biggest things for me.
(I've been a member since day one of iTools, the original name of the service, so obviously in my opinion "YES" its worth it. YMMV.)
PS. Amazon (in the US), SIG Electronics (in Canada) and other dealers on the web often sell discounted codes for .Mac/MobileMe, so there's no need to pay full retail if you're willing to look around a bit.
I love Mobile Me. It's so easy to have everythign synced - and it does it so quickly. I think it is well worth the money.
Yes there are a few bugs right now, but you know Apple is working to fix them and make it even better.
My issue is that I am a frequent user of the email and calendar. I only have 1 computer at home and then the iphone. I almost regularly sync my phone at night time. Therefore is it really necessary for me? This is my thinking, it is not the $$ but is it really going to make things any easier?

Depends.
I'll be blunt and say that Google's offerings might be a better match if ALL YOU DO is email and calendar. There is an inexpensive way to sync Google Mail and Google Calendar to Mac Mail and iCal, so that might work for you.
From the perspective of what you say you have and how you work, there are still some advantages to MobileMe, but it's up to you if you think they're worth $80-100/year:
1. Easy-to-remember, AD-FREE, accessible everywhere (and on the iPhone, push) email. yourname@me.com -- pretty cool.
2. Push calendar, push email, push contacts: almost instantly updated. Again, depending on how you roll, this is either AWESOME or "so what."
3. A *very* slick web interface for all the services that beats the CRAP out of anybody else at the moment. For times or types of people who like to use the web interface, wow.
4. iDisk. 20GB of offsite, secure storage. You can make things in your Public Folder available for sharing, but everything else is safe. Has saved my rear end more than a few times (travel somewhere and forget documents/presentations, sooo easy to retrieve it from iDisk).
5. iLife integration. This translates to "incredibly easy website publishing, incredibly easy web gallery publishing, using iWeb and iPhoto respectively." Again, the presentation knocks Flickr, Picasa et al out of the water and you don't have to worry about overage or bandwidth charges or running out of space (for all practical purposes).
I have a couple of Mac's so I find the fact that via MobileMe, everything is synced between them and my iPhone to be invaluable. Also use it to post a few things via iWeb.
On the whole, I find that it is worth it as it allows me to keep stuff in sync between my Macs and get access to my stuff at work on my Windows machine. Yes there are other alternatives out there - at a much better price point - i.e., free but the service has overall worked well for me.
Take Chas' advice, take it for a trial and decide.
Keep telling yourself that folks because in the back of your head there is this despicable niggling doubt that there is something wrong here and it doesn't go away no matter how many times you try to hit it with a wet flannel of weak excuses
MobileMe is glitching out pretty badly if you want to know. Windows runs better than this. You can change a thing with your cell phone and it will change all across your entire exchange but try changing something in iCal on your computer... it will take a million light years (or sometimes never) for it to change on your mobile device or what ever the hell that you have connected to your MobileMe account.

Works perfectly for me. Some problems on launch, but all gone. Perhaps you should check out your settings; maybe you're not set up properly to sync to MobileMe? I know it can be hard for trolls to type properly on conventional keyboards, what with their stubby fingers and all.

It's worked flawlessly for me?
