Smart Dialing

Does anyone know if I setup smart dialing on the iPhone, will it do the same as it does on a BB phone?

thanks

Not sure what you're talking about.

The iPhone doesn't have "smart dialing." You do have a list of favourites, so from the home screen you would press "Phone," then "favourites" then the person you want to call. Three taps.

Want to call someone NOT in your favourites? From the home screen, tap "Contacts," tap the letter of their name on the sidebar, flick to move up/down, tap the correct name, tap their number. OR (again from the home screen) tap Phone, tap Contacts, flick, tap name, tap number.

It "reads" a lot more complicated than it is. You'll see.

you can double click the home button to access your fav. list quickly, unless your iPod is playing. That will bring up the music controls.

sorry, did not explain myself.
When dialing a number and if you do not put in 1 before then number you get a recorded message telling it is long distance and to avoid this recorded message, put a 1 before ALL numbers. My concern is will be charged long distances charges for all calls. BB phones have 'smart dialing'where you put +1 in front of the numbers and it then knows if it is long distance or not. iPhone tech told to put a 1 in front of all the numbers and the network will know. Thereby charging long distance when required.
This is my question.

Thanks

As far as I can imagine, just add the + sign in front of the 1 in your number formats. (see number formating in your address book).

I though you were looking for a solution to automatic dialing of pauses and numbers on automatic answering systems. e.g. on my treo, I press ONE button for 3 seconds to call my wife's pager and forward her my call back phone number. Great when in the car.

I don't think the iPhone has that capability.
Yet!

You can add pauses to a phone number by using a comma. When you're entering a number from your phone, just press the "+ * #" button, which will give you the option to enter a pause. If you're entering the number using Address Book or MobileME, just type the comma.

I have it set up to do it for my work voicemail, and it works great.

I thus stand corrected.

Wow! That's awesome! Thanks for the tip! I just set it up for calling my husband at the office. (Usually I have to put in the #1 for English, then his extension, but this just did it automatically for me.) So cool!

You'll want to verify this with your carrier, but yes in that case the iPhone has "smart dialing."
