Those with iPhones now.. or with iPhone knowledge

Hey all,
Just a question for the iphone users or those who know a lot about them... due to Rogers crazy data costs, my plan is to purchase one using my current voice plan and waiting for rogers to drop their data prices before signing up. naturally, we know they have CRAZY data prices if you don`t sign up for their data plans... they charge 5 cents per KB!
So my question is, is it possible to turn off 3G to avoid accidently streaming data using their networks?
And if i turn off 3G, will I be automatically then using their EDGE network which still incurs data costs?
And is Safari the only thing that will use data or does the iphone somehow have some constant data streaming in the background that we aren`t aware of, which will make you pay (ie.. 5 cents per KB)?

THANKS!!!!

You should be able to delete the edge/3G network settings, then refresh the settings and it should not take any data.

Um, no. If you have an unlocked 1st gen iPhone (from AT&T) you are able to change the settings if you have a Rogers sim in it.

If you have an AT&T sim in the 1st gen iPhone, you don't have the option to change the Edge settings. Presumably this will also be the case when you have a Rogers sold iPhone in Canada.

There is supposed to be a switch in the settings to turn 3G off which will then default down to Edge. Or you can use airplane mode which will turn off the phone completely (voice and data). The new firmware will allow you to use airplane mode with wifi though.

I can confirm this as a member of my family ran into this problem when he was using his T-Mobile pay as you go card last week in nyc.

EDIT: Although, once jailbreakable, we'll be able to install a services app to take care of this tho.

You can call rogers to make sure that data options for your account is off, so zero chance of using any data, i have a few friends with the iphone and only wanted to use it on wifi and didnt' want a $100 bill for data.

how much do you want to bet there will be a "turn data off" monthly fee in the near future... "for $2/month customers can have their data switched off so that they needn't fear incurring any costly 'pay-per-use' data charges"

I've been reading for months about people accidentally using the data and getting huge bills. I've also read about all the work-arounds people were using to stop the data or change the settings etc. I'm not sure why, but I never had to do any of these things. Right out of the box I inserted my Razr/Fido sim and used Ziphone. I never had any access to Edge at all. If I launched any internet app it would say you're not subscribed to Edge. This was great until last week when I finally wanted to start using it. I suppose that I had never activated it or something with my old phones?
