Heading down to the states (getting an iphone - need an unlocking method)

Hi,

I'm heading down to Dallas on Oct 21 to catch the Cowboys vs Vikings. Pretty excited as it's my first NFL game other than a pre-season game back in 2003 in Tokyo (Colts/Bucs).

Anyway, I'm planning on picking up an iphone for myself, maybe one more for the girlfriend, and just need to clarify something. Am I correct in remembering that you can just go to the apple store, purchase the iphone without signing up for any contracts etc?

And now that I'm on that topic I'll need an unlocking method. If anyone has a source for a turbosim, or one themselves that they dont need, let me know. Also, if there are any other methods that are reliable or a company that is not going to rip me off I'd be interested as well.

Thanks!!

I bought mine this past Friday from an AT&T store - the most they did was ask my name to enter the computer (oh and email address) that was it. To unbrick the phone (since out of the box it's absolutely useless) I used IActivator (very easy program - for Mac only though) IActivator - The iPhone Dev Wiki. The readme instructions with it are very good and this chick had no issues with it. Just make sure your computer has the most recent version of itunes or the program will not launch.
As for getting the phone part unlocked .. I'm still working on that but at least I can use everything else!!

XP activator

I just bought one in Buffalo, on my way to a weekend in Grove City. I downloaded & used the XP software from http://www.pqdvd.net/iphone-unlock-toolkit.html.

Unfortunately, the notebook I brought with me is an old W2K machine - iPhone & this software are not supported on W2K. Fortunately, the hotel had a business workstation that was XP and totally open (admin privs), so I was able to download iTunes & the unlock toolkit. Worked like a charm.

I have a PPC mac at home, and every time I connect my iPhone, I get the AT&T activation window, which I cancel & keep going, but it's a bit annoying. Does iActivator fix that?
